Sharpham Park Monthly Newsletter - October

Autumn is here and the orchard is laden with apples. We’re pressing them to make apple juice, a perfect Somerset drink which will be available in the Harlequin Cafe at Kilver Court soon.  The deer are looking splendid this year and it’s time to cull the population, so keep an eye out for fresh venison at the Sharpham Park Shop and Harlequin Cafe.

We are delighted to announce as we bust with pride, our former Apprentice Spelt Miller, the first in the country, has completed his training and received his certificate from Serena Foreman at Yeovil College. Tom is a true success story. He started as an apprentice with us in September 2009, and has now completed his NVQ level 2 Apprenticeship. Tom is now Head Miller at Sharpham Park and a key part of the team and is making spelt milling history in Britain. 

The good news is that we are now looking for another apprentice to work alongside Tom and the warehouse team. If you would be or know someone who might be interested in this position, send all application to:  info@sharphampark.com

Out and about

Sharpham Park has been busy in London.  Fortnum and Mason's will soon be stocking the new pasta range, fabulous if you haven’t tried it, and much healthier than usual wheat based pasta.

Our pop-up shop at Harvey Nichols will stay open until 2^nd October. Spelt dishes are being featured at the 5^th floor Cafe and Restaurant, where they’ve been a huge hit.

At Kilver Court

Our  sister company, Kilver Court has some exciting times ahead, and we thought we would let you know about them:

Wedding Fair, Sunday 9th October (10am - 4pm)

Is all about Autumn with displays of pumpkins and squashes. A choice of Apples to taste and buy. Cookery Demonstrations using autumn ingredients. Plus, Autumn seed planting, and an opportunity to buy delicious garlic and onions.  Not to mention the Half Price sale of plants from the Kilver Court Nursery.
Autumn Harvest Lecture Day, Thursday 20^th October
The joys of the autumn garden, including harvesting and storing of fruit and vegetables for winter, planting for successional crops, autumn colour, things to do in the garden.   The day will include a guided walk around the gardens at Kilver Court, morning coffee on arrival and lunch.

250g Sharpham Park Artisan Flour
82ml milk
62g unsalted butter
12g baking powder
1 egg yolk
Drop of water
A pinch salt

• Rub together the flour, baking powder and butter at room temperature until it resembles breadcrumbs.
  
• Add the milk and knead gently until a smooth dough is formed.
  
• Roll out to a thickness of 1.5cm and cut out the scones using a round cutter approximately 4.5cm in diameter.
  
• Place on a baking tray lined with parchment paper.
  
• Mix the egg yolk, water and salt to create an egg wash and apply to the tops of the scones gently with a brush.
  
• Leave them to prove in a warm place for 30 minutes then bake in a fan oven for 6 minutes at 200C.
  
• Leave to cool on a wire rack before serving.
  
• For a fruity difference, throw in a handful (30g) of juicy raisins or cranberries just before adding the milk.
  

Best of all, enjoy with some West Country Clotted Cream and Strawberry Jam or just smother with butter.
